AVAANCAA are critical development specialists for organisations wishing to pursue equalities’ led changes. Our interventions are based on acknowledging that we are all participants in the public sector in one form or another - as service users, as employees, as elected officials, or simply as citizens. Yet, paradoxically, many organisations in the public sector are trying to shoehorn this seemingly complex web of relationships into a one dimensional approach to what should be multi-dimensional courses of action: an over investment in what we call ‘systemic accountability’. In the field of equalities in the wider public sector this can be counter productive to the aims of the organisation;
those of the supporting anti-discriminatory legislation; and of remedying the democratic deficit being acknowledged by many. Avaancaa aims to show that there are a number of critical options that can be considered which both enhance the participation of all involved and still allow the overall aims of the organisation to be met through ‘democratising accountability’ initiatives. In doing this Avaancaa works with existing accountability systems and equalities’ legislation through a process of research based analysis of problems, participative involvement of stakeholders, and the development of imaginative solutions.
Our services are aimed at all participants, or potential participants, in the public sector and public sphere - elected representatives, management board members, managers, employees, service users, community members, employing and service delivery organisations, trade unions, equality fora, community groups.
